CONTRARY MOTION
By 1998 the Celtic Rock movement was really catching on in America. Lots of traditional Irish musicians were switching to playing this style, so Tom decided to put out his first album of acoustic music- hence the name “Contrary Motion” (a musical term used to describe melody lines moving in opposite directions). The first album to feature Clarence, and also featuring Cherish the Ladies’ Mary Rafferty playing button accordion.
Tom, Clarence and Mary were playing club gigs around New York at the time, sometimes with Christa Patton as well.

HOOLIGANS IN SUITS
In April 1998 LENAHAN played at the Gosport Easter Festival in England as part of a month-long tour- 28 shows in 30 days. “The show was pretty damn tight at this point and the crowd was very enthusiastic. I was glad we decided to record it, and it was great fun mastering it back in New York with Gene Paul (Les Paul’s son).
“Rich (Graziano, drummer) set up a camera so there’s video of this floating around somewhere. I keep meaning to do something with that someday............"

BRAND NEW BAG!
“We put a lot of time and effort into this and I think it’s my favorite. Ten original songs and some smoking hot instrumentals.
“We were finishing it up when they blew up the World Trade Center. All our other records were done downtown but we did this one in Brooklyn which was a lucky break. We had to go on tour like five days later and we didn’t really want to go..............it was a very weird time. Everybody, even the cop who pulled us over in Pennsylvania, was nice to us when they heard we were from New York, which was not always the case, y’know?
“When we got back a couple of weeks later I wrote a new verse for the “New York Lullabye” and we slapped it on the end as sort of a coda.”
